The engineering process is the sequence of steps that engineers must follow to design and build products. There are many different versions of engineering processes with fewer or additional steps. However they all follow a common pattern. In this article, we’ll look at a 9 step engineering design process used by engineers to solve specific issues.
The first step in the process of engineering design is to define the problem. This is a crucial step, as a failure to define clearly and completely the issue can cause delays in later stages of the design cycle. Most often, the solution to a specific issue will naturally appear in this stage. For example when students were tasked to think of a way to hang their school lunch hooks to the desk’s bottom they came up with a simple method of attaching a hook to bottom of the desk.
The next step is to perform an analysis of requirements to identify the specific requirements of customers and the available resources. This will help you develop a clear set of project requirements and limitations. For example when a client wants their new product to be able to hold 20 pounds, the engineer will calculate how much weight the system will be able to hold and what size the hook should be to ensure that it will hold all of the students’ full lunches.
The next phase is design synthesis or design planning, and is where the details are established and a detailed design of the product is made. This involves setting up the interfaces, outputs, and inputs of the different modules that make up the entire system. This stage includes Gantt and Pert chart worksheets for loading resources and sketches, drawings, and proof-of concept models.
