Is Science Useful?

The issue of whether science is useful or not can be difficult to answer. Scientists are encouraged to follow their interests. However, this could result in research that is focused on a wide range of subjects, many of which aren’t directly beneficial to society. For instance, an important aspect of science is developing theories and making predictions that can be tested. These discoveries are often used to create new technologies, like medical devices, drugs and renewable energy sources.

In order to be considered valuable science must also be able to address problems and issues that affect human wellbeing. This requires collaboration with stakeholders in order to determine their needs, establish clear goals and create an effective plan for addressing the needs. Currently, many scientific initiatives do not have this type of collaboration and are focused on developing knowledge, but without a direct connection to society. Moreover the impact of research is usually not assessed and tracked effectively.

Translational ecology (TE) is one of several strategies that have been developed for producing usable science. It stresses the importance of scientists being proactive in considering and responding to the research context. TE also emphasizes the importance of engaging the end users in a meaningful manner throughout the research process and encouraging learning-based decision-making processes such as adaptive management, which is used extensively by natural resource and land managers.

Students are often faced with the challenge to choose a topic which is both interesting as well and scholarly, particularly when professors impose time limits. The list of easy science research topics will help students select an area that will impress their professors and also provide valuable information to the scientific community.
